Before constructing a building a wise man will first consider what is before him and then build upon a solid foundation (Lk. 14:28-33; Matt. 7:24-27). And so it is in science before we do any talk about origins, evolution, the effects of gravity, thermodynamics, or any laws for that matter; we ought to consider the principle foundation and backbone of science -on which all science stands- known as the “uniformity of nature.”
When we use the term uniformity of nature, that is to say, the laws of science will continue to operate in a consistent and unchanging fashion. Take for instance the law of gravity. Gravity operates in a consistent and unchanging fashion. Would any rational human being put into practice skepticism on this? Not if their cognitive faculties are functioning properly! In fact when I was a Navy SEAL it was a healthy fear and respect for the unchanging consistency of gravity that would caused us to wear not one but, two parachutes when we did HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) jumps out of airplanes.
Ok, so gravity operates in a consistent and unchanging fashion today and it will tomorrow but, have you ever wondered why? That is to ask, what in a so-called accidental and random universe is causing this accidental and random chance environment to behave in a law-like and invariant (unchanging) fashion? How does an accidental and random chance process -not only bring forth- but, consistently account for futuristic certainty of these scientific laws?
On any atheistic worldview (system of thought), there is no explanation as to why the laws of science will operate tomorrow like they do today! The uniformity of nature
is merely assumed on the various atheistic worldviews, never accounted for! Friends this is a tremendous issue and embarrassing one for atheists because this means that before they perform any scientific experiment they must first start with an unaccounted for principle! They have no positive reasons as to why the laws of science will operate tomorrow like they do today and on such assumptions laws are really only so-called laws which are subject to change! On the assumptions of atheism it is perfectly within the realm of possibilities that perhaps the law of gravity will have an opposite effect in 5 seconds and revert to what it was another 7 seconds later.
At this point you might be wondering how do atheistic scientists confront the fact that they rely on the uniformity of nature with no accountability or justification for such a principle? The answer: They don’t! When confronted with this notion they get uncomfortable and just push it out of their minds with a “one day science will have the answers” but, that just plays into the hands of a logical fallacy known as begging the question, because it is the very principle foundation of science in question!
In their refusal they won’t acknowledge that God is the controlling influence that causes the universe and laws of science we discover
to operate in a uniform fashion (Rom. Gen. 8:22
; Heb. 1:3
). In doing so they play the part of a fool (Ps. 14:1
) and they don’t practice what they preach. They betray their professed disbelief in God every-time they flip on a light switch or squeeze a toothpaste bottle with the expectation that paste will come out! In this sense they are inconsistent and rely on the very God they deny. “Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world” (1 Cor. 1:20)
It has been well observed by Dr. Greg Bahnsen:
“Whenever an unbeliever wants to brush his teeth and squeeze the toothpaste tube and expect that the future will be like the past, whenever the unbeliever thinks that there is more to our thinking than just the chance combination of molecules, that unbeliever is giving evidence he or she does not really follow their own worldview. They’re borrowing our worldview! And yes they want to insult God, but even as a little girl could not slap her father’s face unless she was sitting on her father’s lap; the unbeliever cannot slap the face of his or her heavenly Father unless God where holding them up to do it! And the day is coming -the bible tells us- that God will finally say you don’t want me…then your will be done! And at that point it will be the crack of doom.”
